Best Time for a Cooking Class in Crete
The season for cooking classes in Crete runs from spring through fall, with the widest choice from April to October. Some run through winter or operate on request, but many of the island’s most popular classes take place in gardens, farms and outdoor kitchens, so the weather matters more than it would for an entirely indoor cooking lesson.

Crete cooking classes run mainly from April to October. If you are choosing dates for Crete as a whole, May, June and September offer the best overall balance for a trip that includes a class. The weather is warm, rain is relatively limited and you avoid the strongest July and August heat. October is a good cooler alternative, but rain becomes noticeably more frequent.
July and August are the hottest months, with average highs around 31°C near Chania. Because many Cretan cooking classes include time outdoors in gardens or on farms, a late-afternoon class can be more comfortable than one that spends the hottest part of the day outside.
From November to March the island is quieter and wetter, and the choice of classes drops considerably. Some classes run year-round or on request, but check your specific dates instead of assuming the summer schedule continues through winter.
Once your dates are fixed, choose the start time to suit the season. Many classes offer a morning start around 10 a.m. or a late-afternoon start. Morning works particularly well in winter, when daylight is short. From April to June and in September and October, either start time generally works well. Some longer countryside classes include hotel transfers and run into the evening, so check the return time as well as the start time.

Which classes run in winter
From April to October all five classes below normally run. From November to March the choice narrows considerably, because some classes stop for the winter and far fewer visitors are on the island. When we checked, the three most-reviewed classes near Chania took bookings in every month, although only a small share of their reviews were written between November and March. Outside GetYourGuide, two Chania operators say on their own websites that their classes run all year, one of them on request.

A winter class works best near Chania. Crete’s tourist season is short: in each of the last three years, the island’s hotels, apartments and campsites recorded under 5% of August’s overnight stays in every month from November to March. Classes still run, but much of the resort trade around them is closed, so plan transport and a place to stay before you book. A winter class suits a quiet off-season stay in or near Chania, for travelers who would rather have cool weather and empty villages than beach days.

Which start time should you choose?
Every class on this site runs at set start times, and they did not change across the four dates we read: October 15, January 14, April 15 and July 15. Many classes start around 10 a.m. or in the late afternoon, and they last four to six hours, so a class takes up either the middle of the day or the evening, and the meal you cook becomes your lunch or your dinner.
In summer. Average highs in July and August are about 31°C at Chania, and the garden walk, picking vegetables and the wood-fired oven are outdoors at most classes. A late-afternoon start puts the cooking after the hottest part of the day, and you eat close to sunset, which is after 8 p.m. from May to mid-August. A 10 a.m. class runs into the early afternoon, when the day is at its hottest. Bring a hat for the garden walk either way.
In winter. The sun sets around 5:15 p.m. in early December and not much later from mid-November to mid-January. A 10 a.m. start keeps any garden walk and the meal in daylight. A late-afternoon class finishes after dark, which suits the White Mountains class, where dinner and the transfer back are included, better than a class you drive to yourself.
In spring and fall. Temperatures suit either start time. The sun sets after 7 p.m. from April to September, so a late-afternoon class still eats in daylight or at dusk.
The White Mountains class lasts about six hours from a 3:30 p.m. pickup, which makes it an evening out rather than an afternoon one. If you want your evening free, choose a 10 a.m. class.

Choose a date to see sunset in Chania, the usual temperatures and rainy days for that month, whether the date is a Greek public holiday, and which class start time suits that day. Many classes offer a morning or a late-afternoon start, and from November to March fewer classes run.

Choosing the month for a Crete trip
For most visitors a cooking class is one day of a longer holiday, so choose the month for Crete first. May, June and September offer the best overall balance: warm weather, relatively little rain and average highs of about 25 to 29°C at Chania, without the peak July and August heat. June has the longest days, with the sun setting after 8:30 p.m. October is a good cooler alternative, at about 24°C, but it is noticeably wetter: rainy days rise from about one in September to about six in October, and average rainfall from about 19 mm to 80 mm.
July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of about 31°C at Chania, and the island records its most overnight stays of the year. April is cooler, at about 20°C, and the island is still quieter than in May. From November to March far fewer visitors stay on the island, the days are shorter and rain is more likely, with about 11 to 12 rainy days a month in December and January.
Month by month in Crete
January and February. The wettest and coolest months, with average highs of about 14 to 15°C at Chania. The olive harvest usually ends by the end of January, and wild greens, the horta that Cretans boil with lemon and oil, are part of the winter and spring kitchen. Fewer classes run, so check your date before you plan around one.
March and April. The rain eases and highs climb to about 17°C in March and 20°C in April. Clean Monday, the start of Orthodox Lent, falls on March 15 in 2027, and Orthodox Easter on May 2. The Rethymno garden class and other seasonal classes return in April.
May and June. Warm, dry and settled, with about two rainy days in May and almost none in June. Highs rise from about 25°C in May to 29°C in June, and the days are at their longest.
July and August. The hottest months, at about 31°C, and almost rainless. Across Greece, field tomatoes are at their peak from July to October, the season for the stuffed vegetables, gemista, taught at several classes, including the Nerokourou and Stylos classes. Book a late-afternoon start.
September and October. Still warm, at about 28°C in September and 24°C in October, and the island stays busy in September. The olive harvest usually begins in October, starting in the lower groves, and the rain returns: an average October has about six rainy days, against about one in September.
November and December. Cooler and wetter, with highs of about 16 to 20°C and about 7 to 11 rainy days a month. The harvest continues, the island is quiet, and fewer classes run.

The last column is 2025’s overnight stays in registered accommodation across the whole island, with August as 100. It shows how busy Crete is with visitors staying overnight, and 2023 and 2024 had the same shape. It does not show how full any class is, because a class with twelve places can fill in any month.
Holidays and busy dates
Greek public holidays in the year ahead fall on October 28, December 25 and 26, January 1 and 6, Clean Monday (March 15, 2027), March 25, Orthodox Good Friday and Easter Monday (April 30 and May 3, 2027), May 1, Whit Monday (June 21, 2027) and August 15. Easter is the biggest family holiday of the year in Greece. In 2027 May 1 falls on the Saturday before Easter; when that last happened, in 2021, the government moved the May Day holiday to a later date, so check nearer the time.
The Nerokourou and Stylos classes took bookings on every one of these dates when we checked. The White Mountains class had no dates on October 28, from December 24 to 26, on December 31 and January 1, or on January 6, and took bookings over Easter.
Booking ahead
Every class on this site offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and the booking page lets you reserve now and pay later, so it costs little to book once your dates are fixed. None of the operators we checked publishes how far ahead its classes fill. On October 15, 2026, the date we checked nearest to the day we read them, the booking page marked the White Mountains and Nerokourou classes as likely to sell out; the January, April and July dates carried no such label. If you have only one free day, keep a second class in mind.

Sources and methodology
Where each figure comes from
Class calendars and start times. Each GetYourGuide listing carries a booking calendar with one entry per bookable date. We read the calendars of the 31 Crete cooking-class listings in this site’s data on September 28, 2026, for the year ahead, and the start times on the booking card for October 15, 2026 and January 14, April 15 and July 15, 2027. Of the 28 listings with a calendar, 18 had dates in December, January or February and 10 did not. Durations, inclusions and cancellation terms come from the same listings. The two Chania operators outside GetYourGuide were read on their own websites on September 28, 2026: Cretan Gea says its programme “operates year-round”, and Cretan Activities says its lessons are “offered all year round on request”.
Winter operation. A calendar that accepts a date does not prove a class runs then, so we also read the dates of each class’s published reviews. The White Mountains, Nerokourou and Stylos classes each have reviews written between November and March, across several years. The Rethymno garden class and the 4x4 farm day have none from December to March.
Weather. Average highs and lows are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Souda station near Chania, about 147 m up on the Akrotiri peninsula. Rainy days, meaning days with at least 1 mm, are the 1961 to 1990 WMO normals submitted by the same service, because no official 1991 to 2020 rainfall normal is published for the station; averages we calculated from the station’s 1991 to 2020 monthly reports differ by under two days in every month. The service’s older 1958 to 2010 table for the same station counts any measurable rain and so gives more rainy days, for example about 3 in September and 9 in October; both series show the same jump from September into October. Many classes are in villages inland and higher up, which are usually a little cooler than the station.
Visitors. Eurostat’s monthly table of nights spent at tourist accommodation (tour_occ_nin2m) for the Kriti region, 2023 to 2025.
Daylight. Sunrise and sunset are calculated for Chania with the standard solar-position method, in local time, and agree with published tables to within a few minutes.
Seasons and holidays. The olive harvest window is from the Greek agriculture ministry’s 2024 specification for the protected Kriti olive oil. The wild-greens season is from a 2022 study of wild greens in central Crete in the journal Biology. The tomato season is from Agricultural University of Athens teaching material and covers Greece as a whole. Holiday dates follow the Greek public-holiday calendar, with Orthodox Easter calculated.
Where the evidence stops. The weather figures are long-term averages for one station near the coast, not a forecast for your day, and they cannot tell you how hot a particular village kitchen gets. The rainy-day normals are older than the temperature normals. The visitor figures count overnight stays in registered accommodation across the whole island, leave out short-let rentals, and say nothing about how full the classes are. The calendars are one reading on one day and do not show how many places were left. The start times come from four dates. No source we found publishes how quickly classes sell out, so the page gives no lead time.
