What a cooking class in Crete costs, and what changes as the price goes up

A cooking class in Crete with a solid review record costs between about $100 and $135 per person, and that price includes the meal you cook and the wine or raki poured with it. The cheapest class with a page on this site, the two-hour Minoan class near Heraklion, starts from $61. Private classes run from about $224 per person, or from about $336 for a whole group, and very few of them have reviews yet.

The main differences

  • A good all-round choice: the White Mountains class above Chania, from $123. It costs the same as the Nerokourou home kitchen near Chania and adds hotel pickup and two more hours.
  • Most of the well-reviewed classes sit in one narrow band. Between $106 and $123 you are choosing a host and a part of the island more than a different kind of class.
  • Hotel pickup is the extra that changes the real cost most. Only the White Mountains class and the 4x4 day trip include it; everywhere else you add a taxi or a hire car.
  • Paying more than about $135 buys privacy or a newer listing, not more food. The menus, the length and the wine look much the same.
  • Every shared class prices per person; some private classes price per group. For four people, a private class near Heraklion priced per group can work out cheaper per head than four places on a shared class, although it has no reviews yet.

The class we’d compare first

The White Mountains class costs the same as the Nerokourou home kitchen near Chania, from $123 each, but it runs six hours rather than four and an air-conditioned minivan collects you from your hotel and brings you back. It also has the longest review history of any cooking class on the island, rated 4.9/5 from more than 700 reviews.

The day starts with a walk through the vegetable garden and includes a short walk to a shepherd’s hut, where the host explains the olive harvest, before you cook and eat the meal with local cheese and wine. The kitchen sits in the mountains above Chania, roughly 45 minutes’ drive each way, so part of those six hours is the ride. Recipes and photographs are emailed afterwards.

It makes most sense if you are staying anywhere around Chania without a car, or if nobody wants to be the sober driver after the wine. If you have a car and would rather keep the afternoon short, Nerokourou is ten to fifteen minutes from town and rated 5.0 from 120 reviews.

Staying somewhere else on the island? These are the classes we’d look at in each area.

Near Rethymno

Chrysoula’s home cooking lessons, from $113, are held in the covered outdoor kitchen of a family home in the Arkadi area east of Rethymno, with a wood oven at the back of the terrace. You cook a starter, a main such as gemista or moussaka, and cheese pies with honey, then eat it all with local wine and raki. It is rated 5.0 from more than 120 reviews. Pickup isn’t part of the listing, and reviewers say the house is a little tricky to find, so open the map pin before you leave.

The garden class at Pigi, from $117, is the better fit for a mixed group of meat-eaters and vegetarians: it prepares both menus as standard. Pickup can be added for an extra charge.

Near Heraklion

The Arolithos village class, from $110 and rated 4.9 from more than 80 reviews, adds a walk round Arolithos traditional village and entry to its museum before you cook in the taverna. It sits on the old road from Heraklion towards Rethymno, and transport is not included.

For the lowest price, the Minoan class is two hours from $61, cooking a reconstructed ancient menu in clay pots east of the city. Its review record is still short, at eight reviews, and the operator says it is not suitable for children under 12.

In the south, near Moires

The Moires olive-farm class costs from $106 and is rated 5.0 from more than 120 reviews. It is a family olive farm, so the class includes a guided olive-oil tasting, a three-course meal and wine, and you take home the leftovers. It suits you if you are staying in the south or visiting Phaistos; from the north coast resorts it is a long drive, and it is not suitable for children under 12.

A whole day out from Heraklion or Lasithi

The 4x4 day trip, from $103 with hotel pickup, is eight hours of farm visit, pottery workshop, off-road tracks and lunch, with the cooking lesson as one part of the day. It is rated 4.7 from more than 240 reviews. If cooking is the reason you are going, a dedicated class gives you more time at the stove.

Prices checked October 2026. Operators use dynamic pricing, so these figures are a guide; check the booking page for the current price. Each starting price is for one adult on the cheapest available date, and child prices can differ. Every class above links to its GetYourGuide page with its rating and review count beside it; a short review record is a reason to read the reviews before booking, not a verdict on the class. Tastings, cruises and food tours where you don’t cook yourself aren’t counted as cooking classes here.

Why do some classes cost more than others?

Mostly because of where the class is and whether a minivan collects you. The cooking itself, the meal and the wine change much less than the price does.

Under $100: shorter or newer classes. The Minoan class is two hours from $61, and Stamatia’s class at Stavromenos, from $84, adds cheese-making and an olive-oil tasting to a four-hour lesson with lunch. Both are well rated but have only a handful of reviews so far.

About $100 to $125: where most well-reviewed classes sit. Four hours of cooking in a home, garden or village kitchen, then the meal with wine. Within this band the gaps are a few dollars, so pick by the part of the island you are staying in, then by the review record. The Rethymno home kitchen at $113 is a typical example.

Above $130: a farm, privacy or a newer listing. The Stylos farm class, from $134, cooks everything over a wood fire on a working organic farm with goats, chickens and rabbits, which makes it a good family choice. Beyond that the extra money pays for a private class or for a listing that has no reviews yet.

One thing that does not follow the price is the length of the day. The White Mountains class gives you six hours for the same $123 that buys four at Nerokourou, because the minivan ride is part of the package.

What stays the same at every price?

The meal and the drinks. Every class in the table ends with you eating what you cooked, and wine or raki comes with it, so there is no cheap version where you cook and then pay for lunch. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is standard too.

Much of the day looks alike too. Many of these classes cook outdoors, in a garden or under a covered terrace, with a wood oven doing the slow dishes, and you eat at one long table with the rest of the group. Paying more does not get you a better menu; it changes where you cook, how long the day runs and, at the top, whether other guests are there at all.

Does hotel pickup change the real price?

Yes, more than any other difference between the classes. The White Mountains class and the 4x4 day trip include it. Pigi offers it for an extra charge, and every other class in the table expects you to arrive by hire car or taxi, usually at a village kitchen outside town.

For a sense of scale, the olive-oil cooking class near Kritsa charges €20 (about $22) per person for its optional hotel pickup. Add something similar to any class without transport, both ways if you take taxis, and the $10 gap between the Chrysoula class and the White Mountains class closes quickly. Euro figures are converted at €1 = $1.1206 (European Central Bank, 9 October 2026).

At the starting price, two people pay $246 for the White Mountains class and four people pay $492, transport included. Which classes include the transfer →

What does a private class cost?

There are two kinds, and they price differently.

Private classes at a host’s kitchen or your villa, priced per person. The private class at your villa near Chania starts from $224 each, $101 more than the White Mountains class, and it has no reviews yet.

Private classes priced per group. These quote one price for a set maximum number of guests, so the cost per head falls as more of you come:

The private chef at your villa in Rethymno is a different thing: from $362 for up to four, a chef cooks and serves a multi-course meal in your kitchen and talks you through it, so you watch more than you cook. It is rated 5.0, but from only two reviews.

A few other private listings sit between these prices, and only one of them has a review. For four people, the Heraklion group class works out cheaper per head than four places on a shared class, although you would be booking with no reviews to go on. For a couple, every private option costs more than a shared class.

Classes that offer less for the price

A few listings cost about the same as a well-reviewed class but give you less, or have a weak start.

The farm-to-fork course at a honey farm costs from $112 for two hours, with two reviews; the Baxes class at Kroussonas costs the same for four hours and is rated 5.0 from 18 reviews. The olive-oil class near Kritsa, from $89, is rated 3.5 from four reviews, and the village class in the Amari valley, also from $89, is rated 4.1 from four reviews. The cheapest listing near Chania, the olive grove and mill visit from $47, is a 90-minute visit with a short class, rated 4.0 from six reviews. For $14 to $17 more than either $89 class, the 4x4 day trip and the Moires farm class each have more than a hundred reviews behind them.

Should you pay more?

Pay the extra for the White Mountains class if you have no car near Chania: the pickup and the longer day are worth more than the price difference to any class you have to drive to. Pay for the Stylos farm if you have children who will enjoy the animals. Don’t pay for privacy unless there are four of you or the occasion matters; most travellers get the same food, wine and welcome in a small shared group for between $100 and $125.
