Chania: Authentic Cooking Class in the White Mountains

About This Experience

This is the class that takes you out of Chania altogether. A minivan collects you from your hotel and climbs into the foothills of the Lefka Ori - the White Mountains - where the kitchen is a family property surrounded by its own vegetable garden rather than a rented demonstration space in town.

You start in the garden, walking the beds with your host and picking the herbs and vegetables that go into the meal, which is also where most of the teaching happens: what grows when, what Cretans actually use wild oregano and dittany for, and why the olive oil here is poured with a heavier hand than anywhere else in Greece. A short mountain walk to a shepherd's enclave follows, with the olive harvest explained on the ground where it happens.

Back at the kitchen you cook a full traditional meal - dakos and tzatziki to begin, then the main dishes - and sit down to eat it with local cheese and regional wine, finishing with the preserved-fruit spoon sweets that end a Cretan meal. At around six hours door to door it is the longest of the Chania classes and the only one with transport built into the price, so it suits travellers without a hire car and anyone who would rather see the mountain villages than the coast road.
