Crete 4x4 Tour: Farm Visit, Cooking Class, Pottery & Lunch
About This Experience
This is not really a cooking class with a drive attached - it is a full off-road day through the Cretan interior with a proper hands-on cooking session in the middle of it. If you want to see the island as well as cook its food, this is the one that does both.
The day starts at a working farm, where you meet the family, learn how the daily round actually runs and can try milking a goat, then taste what the farm makes on the spot. From there the 4x4 leaves the tarmac for mountain tracks and a gorge, with viewpoint stops, before dropping into the Lasithi Plateau - the high bowl of farmland ringed by mountains that most coach tours only skirt.
A visit to a village pottery workshop covers the wheel-thrown craft worked here for generations, and then the cooking begins: traditional dishes prepared with local ingredients and herbs, eaten together afterwards as a full Cretan lunch with wine. On the way back you stop at Krasi to see one of the oldest plane trees in Europe, and at an olive oil mill to taste extra virgin oil where it is pressed.
It is a long day - eight hours - and the cooking is one component among several rather than the whole point. Book it if you want the island and the food; book a village class if you want three unhurried hours at a kitchen table.

We had an amazing day out with Nikkos. We booked a private tour which meant we could go at our own pace and Nikkos was able to really show us his Crete. We went through his village (met his Dad, Aunt and Uncle!) learning all about local life. We visited his cousins goat farm and another cousins taverna to learn about greek food. The visit to the Olive Oil factory was fantastic, learning about olive oil production and how it is sold and used was eye opening. We would recommend this tour and would encourage paying a bit extra to do a private tour. Thanks again Nikkos and the whole team that looked after us so well :)

Our guide Nikos was amazing! We had a great group too, we started out as strangers and ended up safari friends, the whole thing was so fun and informative, we had a fantastic time, the farm was awesome, the goats were so cute! The rest of the itinerary changed from the original booking after that, instead of a cooking class and pottery, we went to Zeus’s Cave and had lunch, but it was still a fantastic experience, we all had a great time together and Nikos was brilliant! He was knowledgeable and fun, and really went above and beyond, our girls made friends with Holly, another little lady on our tour and Nikos made sure that they all had fun, we all got to know each other and the island, we would definitely book again! Highly recommended!!

Simply WOW! We had the best day. Our guides Demitrious and Michaelis were great and made the trip so memorable. Demitrious was great at the off road driving and along with Michaelis who was the best storyteller of Greek mythology. Both gave us the best day which was full of laughter from start to finish. The stop off’s were lovely and with family run taverna’s and the food was simply delicious. Pottery was great fun, and cookery class topped the whole day off. There were seven of us on the trip so with the guides nine of us and we started as strangers but ended as friends. How much of the day is actually cooking?
Roughly an hour and a half of the eight. The rest is the 4x4 route, the farm, the pottery workshop, the plateau villages, the plane tree at Krasi and the olive mill. It is a day trip with a cooking class in it, not a cooking class with a transfer.
Is it suitable for children?
The farm stop, the goat milking and the pottery wheel are the parts families single out. The off-road sections are bumpy, so it suits children who travel well rather than very young ones.
